Business Card

Project Overview
In this project, students will design a professional business card that showcases the logo they previously created. Using Adobe Illustrator and/or Adobe Photoshop, students will apply principles of layout, typography, hierarchy, and branding to create a cohesive and polished design.
The goal is to extend the established brand identity into a real-world marketing piece. Students will focus on clarity, readability, alignment, and visual balance while maintaining consistency with their logo’s color scheme, typography, and overall style.

Objectives
Students will:
* Apply branding consistency using their original logo.
* Demonstrate strong layout and alignment skills.
* Establish clear visual hierarchy for contact information.
* Use typography effectively and professionally.
* Prepare a print-ready digital file with proper dimensions and bleed.
* Present a clean, professional final design.

Materials & Software
* Computer access
* Adobe Illustrator (preferred for layout and print setup)
* Adobe Photoshop (optional for textures or mockups)
* Previously created logo file (vector format recommended)
* Project guidelines for business card dimensions (standard: 3.5" x 2")

Process
1. Review Branding: Revisit your logo design, color palette, and font choices.
2. Plan Layout: Sketch at least 3 thumbnail layouts exploring front and back designs.
3. Set Up Document: Create a properly sized document (3.5" x 2") with bleed and margins.
4. Design Front: Include logo and key visual elements.
5. Design Back (if applicable): Add contact information with clear hierarchy (name, title, phone, email, website, etc.).
6. Refinement: Adjust spacing, alignment, and typography for clarity and balance.
7. Mockup & Export: Create a realistic mockup and export a print-ready PDF.

Assessment Criteria
* Consistency with original logo and brand identity
* Clear visual hierarchy and readability
* Professional typography and alignment
* Clean, organized layout
* Proper file setup for print (size, bleed, resolution)
* Overall presentation quality

Creative Challenge
Business cards are small but powerful marketing tools. Consider how to make yours memorable while remaining professional. Could you incorporate subtle texture, a bold color block, or a creative layout? Think about how the card feels visually and how it represents the personality of the brand.

This project reinforces professional design standards and challenges students to think about how branding extends beyond a logo into cohesive, real-world applications.

Learning Objectives / Student Targets

Students will be able to:
1. Apply branding consistency by integrating their previously designed logo, color palette, and typography into a cohesive business card design.
2. Use principles of layout and alignment to organize visual elements in a clear and balanced composition.
3. Establish visual hierarchy to effectively present contact information and key branding elements.
4. Use typography professionally to ensure readability and reinforce brand identity.
5. Demonstrate technical proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and/or Adobe Photoshop while designing a print-ready layout.
6. Prepare files correctly for print production, including proper dimensions, bleed, and resolution.
7. Create a polished and professional marketing piece that represents a brand effectively.

Investigate emotional experiences through personal and collaborative artmaking.
Students relate artistic ideas and works to other disciplines, including how material behavior influences compositional decisions.

Grading Rubric

Rubrics have become popular with teachers as a means of communicating expectations for an assignment, providing focused feedback on works in progress, and grading final products. A rubric is a document that articulates the expectations for an assignment by listing the criteria, or what counts, and describing levels of quality from excellent to poor.

Student Reflection

A student reflection is a brief, thoughtful explanation of how and why a student created their artwork, including the choices they made, challenges they faced, and what they learned during the process. In art, reflection is important because it helps students develop critical thinking, recognize growth, strengthen their creative decision-making, and take ownership of their artistic development.
